The Initiatve for Developing Mathematical Thinking (IDMT) is committed to enhancing student achievement in mathematics by offering professional development for elementary and middle-school teachers. It is our view that all students can succeed in mathematics and that teachers have perhaps the most significant impact on student learning. Therefore, we work to ensure all of our project teachers have a thorough knowledge of mathematical content, effective instructional practices, and progressions of student learning.
Teaching for Understanding
At the IDMT, we use a research-based framework to help teachers teach mathematics for understanding. Our framework is comprised of five critical features; taking students' ideas seriously, pressing students conceptually, encouraging multiple strategies and representations, addressing misconceptions, and understanding the relational structure of mathematics.
